Waste Challenge | Plastic Free July
Waste, E-Waste, single-use plastics and food waste all end up in landfills, which is a growing concern for Councils and private collectors around Australia.
Plastic Free July began in 2011 by Western Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC) and has since grown to a global initiative attracting the interest of millions of people from around the world. It challenges participants to avoid using single-use plastics wherever possible and encourages users to change their habits.
Participants set their own targets – it is a challenge, not a competition. The challenge is intended to make you think about all the single-use plastic you consume every day. Whatever you cut out is a job well done. Plastic surrounds us every day, your car, phone charger, computer, etc. Don’t worry, you can still use all of these in July, the challenge is to reduce single-use plastics, the items you use for 5 minutes and then dispose of, which last forever. Key offenders are coffee cups and lids, straws, disposable utensils, balloons, bin liners, chip packets, milk containers, chicken and fish containers, glad wrap etc
Reducing the use of plastics helps us move to a more sustainable future, which is an initiative SALT definitely supports. An alarming fact is that every piece of plastic ever produced still exists because it does not disintegrate.
